Mentoring
By nealejames | January 26, 2007
Photography for me is an evolving process. The investment doesn’t just stop at the purchase of new equipment, it includes time spent in mentoring sessions with the World’s best photographers. I’m particularly lucky to have found creative solace in a vocation I absolutely adore. I know I know, that sounds particularly arty farty, a little flouncy and fluffy, but I truly mean it. This week I spent five days being mentored by two Australian photographers who have set new standards in the wedding photography field, Worldwide. Jerry Ghionis and Ryan Schembri respectively have won many global awards for their approach to composition, colour and digital artistry in the nuptuals market. They’re in demand at conferences and trade shows internationally as keynote speakers. Alongside nineteen professional and very talented colleagues, this has been a truly inspirational week, which can only manifest itself in even more skill, service and devotion we give to the couples who invite us to photograph at their special day. I sometimes hear people refer to wedding photography as a little expensive. The work on the day is often half the story. It’s the album construction, digital retouching, order process and post event artistic decision making that separates a wedding snapper, from a wedding photographer. As guests depart they take with them their favours, a memory and a smile. I know from our own wedding that when we departed from the venue, we wanted something special to bring the images alive when we returned from honeymoon. When we depart as wedding photographers in the evening, that’s what we leave to do for all our couples. Obviously if we can leave with a bit of cake to have with our tea, that makes us happy too.
