Turbulent times

By nealejames | January 18, 2007

I do it to myself you know. I’m talking of my nervousness about flying. I think it all started sometime in the late 90s when I took a flight back from New York through a storm that forced all cabin crew on my aircraft to wear, “We’ve never experienced it like this before” faces. That’s when you know you’re in trouble isn’t it? This blog is dedicated to my friends, whom I rely upon whilst sat in departure lounges abroad to lie to me about the weather back home if I happen to text and ask. In particular our very good friend Karen, this is directed at you with love. Let me explain the rules. When I ask, “Is it as windy as I’m hearing on the news reports?” What I want you to say is, “Good God no. I don’t know where on Earth Sky get their reports from, but from where I’m sitting, it seems to have blown itself out. Infact the skies are blue, and butterflies are dancing in the meadows with merryment and ease.” If you ever have to fly with me, which ironically you do this coming March, you’ll understand the importance of a white lie on any day I intend to sit in a jet powered pop can. So there we were earlier today sat on the runway at Geneva International, about to depart for Gatwick on a day that saw devastation in London and 80mph winds, and what does ‘Captain Smoothy’ prior to hurtling down Runway Zero Two Three (that’s for the anoraks that like heading directions) say? “Weather in London, mild, and just a little bit brisk.” You see Karen, he clearly knew I was on board.
