Saturday 16th December, I voted!
By nealejames | December 17, 2006
Okay I got carried away in the heat of the moment. The X-Factor Final, 2006. Leona sang like an angel. Ray, well he was good, but I couldn’t help thinking his repertoire would be challenged really quite quickly if he won the prize of a recording contract. So I saw it as a personal duty for the first time ever, to make sure I phone voted on a telly talent show. Or maybe, I was brainwashed into doing so by the show’s host, Ms. Thornton. Infact now that the show is over and Leona is recovering from the post party knees up, I can almost certainly say I voted because Kate told me to. I remember distinctly being told that my vote really did count and this was a particularly close vote, exceptionally difficult to call. Come to think of it, I only made it worse by actually voting. Close voting then on TV talent shows. A human nature case study. You see someone starving on the street, cap in hand, asking every passer by for a donation, and most people would rather cut their legs off than cross the road to give ‘em some loose change it would seem… but watching junk telly of an evening, someone tells you how close the close voting is and that every penny counts enough to buy the TV exec in charge of the phone vote a new Porsche for each day of the week, and you spend half an hour hanging off the phone spending the family crown jewels! “Keep voting guys, this week is the closest vote since the closest vote of last week and the closest vote yet that we managed to closely get to on the week before the close one the fortnight before… so… keep voting because it’s just too close to call, it’s that close… did I tell you, it’s close?” Having said that, I’m chuffed that Leona won. She clearly owes her career to my third voting call. The second would have only resulted in a draw.
