The King of portraits

By nealejames | September 30, 2006

On Saturday 30th September we ran an open day for the Best of Newbury exhibition, whereby the good and great of the town could show up, no appointment necessary, and sit for their portrait. The exhibition opens first week in November at the Corn Exchange. It’s a market town in middle England, but this is no small town snapshots exercise. It features the Big Issue seller, through to royalty. Donald King (left) may not be blue blooded, but he’s every bit the dignitary in our eyes. Perhaps one of my favourite portraits, when questioned for his biog plate, he commented that we should write about his age. He wants to live to 100. He’s currrently 84.
