Mannequin blues
By john.fuller | August 3, 2006
It was like a scene from that late 80s chick flick, Mannequin. I was Andrew McCarthy, sadly the mannequin involved didn’t turn into a youthful Kim Cattrall. I was shooting a portrait of a buying director in a department store. On the edge of the frame, I wanted to sneak in a mannequin. I had no idea those things weighed so much! Slung over my shoulder I’m edging this thing into frame, right hand around her left leg… half way up the thigh, for balance, you understand… and the other hand grappling with her skirt keeping it broadly wrapped around her body. Two feet to go… and her head falls off. I let go of her skirt, try to grab the head on it’s descent, whilst her frame lists to one side dramatically… and crrrrrrrrrunch… my back refuses to travel in all the directions intended to stop her royal plasticity smashing on to the floor. Fortunately I know a good massage therapist, and within 24 hours I’m ready to do battle once again. I walked gingerly past the mannequin again yesterday afternoon. I’m sure she winked.
